Northern Spain and La Rioja for Gourmets (Sample Itinerary)
Day 1: Barcelona - Alella
Arrival and check in at the hotel. Departure to Alella for having lunch in a traditional Catalan Masia (country house) and afterwards visit the Cavas Alta Alella Cellar.The city has a large wine growing tradition that dates back to the days of the Roman Empire. They are pioneers in the ecological Cava elaboration and are the only ones who do the first fermentation in oak barrels, what is an exception in the Cava industry, where the standard is to use stainless steel tanks.Return to Barcelona and free evening. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel. Optional night excursion to a Flamenco Show.
Day 2: Barcelona - Vilafranca del Penedès - Barcelona
After breakfast visit to Torres Wine Cellar in Vilafranca del Penedès. After the visit we will have a wine-pairing lunch at their Restaurant. On the way back to Barcelona we will enjoy a sightseeing excursion of the city. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
Day 3: Barcelona - Zaragoza - Logroño
Departure after breakfast to Zaragoza. There we will visit to the Pilar Basilica and we will have lunch at a famous Tortillas' Restaurant, where they make all kind of fresh home-made ommeletes. We will continue our journey to Logroño, where we will see the old town, its Cathedral built in the 16th Century and the Market Square, Santa María del Palacio. We will walk through the Jacobean Way, the Ruavieja Street, which was the first street in the city. Arrival to the hotel, and after a refreshment we will walk to the famous Laurel Street and enjoy a "tapas" dinner in one of the best tapas tavern of the city.Free evening to explore the area at your own pace.
Day 4: Logroño - San Millán de la Cogolla - Haro - Laguardia - Logroño
After Breakfast departure to visit Yuso and Suso's Monasteries which are where Spanish language was forged, because here was where Gonzalo de Berceo wrote the first cultured poetry in the Castilian language. Yuso library contains more than 300 documents dated from the 11th to the 15th centuries. We will continue to the city of Haro, famous for its tapas' quarter, "La Herradura" with some free to walk in the city and have lunch. Afterwards we will visit the biggest buried wine cellar in the area, El Fabulista, located under the Samaniego Palace and have a taste of their wonderful wines with some time to walk in this beautiful mediaeval town. Return to Logroño and dinner at the hotel.
Day 5: Logroño - Elciego - Burgos - Peñafiel
After breakfast we will leave Logroño to visit Marqués de Riscal wine cellar with spectacular views of Laguardia and the collection hotel designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry. We will continue our way to the city of Burgos, where we will visit its impressive gothic Cathedral and some time to walk in the center. Then we will head to Peñafiel, which is the cradle of Ribera del Duero wine area. Accommodation and dinner in Peñafiel.
Day 6: Peñafiel
After breakfast we will visit Peñafiel's castle, which was declared in 1917 as National Munument. This is one of the most beautiful forts from the mediaeval age. We will continue to Protos and Legaris wine cellars to visit its facilities and have a taste of their wines. Dinner and accommodation in Peñafiel.
Day 7: Peñafiel - Segovia - Madrid.
< After breakfast we will leave to Segovia, where we will have a panoramic view of the city and visit the Alcazar. We will continue our journey to Madrid, where we will see the most emblematic points of the city. Farewell dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
Day 8: Departure
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Madrid Airport. Check in at the airline desk and end of our services.
